We are encouraging people to leave their cars at home by supporting an initiative to develop a Walk & Ride Network of safe and pleasant routes for walkers, cyclists and in some cases horse riders. The aim is to link residential areas with schools, places of work, the town centre and shops – as well as existing cycle trails and footpath networks. This project is one of several initiatives led by our Sustainable Travel Group. Others include the Revolution VLR electric train trial; Buses & Boots walking and activity guides; and Moving Together, a new online platform designed to help local people find local transport solutions.
Slopes Team & Friends of the Pavilion Gardens
Weekly work sessions on The Slopes have become a regular activity for Town Team volunteers – who meet each Thursday and Saturday during the spring and summer to take care of everything from weeding, trimming, cleaning moss from stone walls, urns and railings, and painting the benches. Recently their sessions have been doubled to include numerous sites around the town too. And in 2023 the group merged with the Friends of the Pavilion Gardens.
Each year we work with other organisations to decorate the town for Christmas – putting the seasonal sparkle back into Buxton. And the decorations aren't just for the winter... we dress up the town for the summer festival season too. Decorations are created by the Baublers, who meet most Mondays and Tuesdays at their barn home in Harpur Hill.
A town clean-up has become an annual event – and everyone is welcome to bring their buckets and join in. We split the area into zones, each covered by a different team, who clean signs, litter bins, post boxes and anything else they come across, as well as picking up litter and clearing any weeds.
This neglected garden alongside the River Wye has been transformed thanks to volunteers who have planted flowers, cut back trees and cleared the river. They have also driven valuable initiatives such as Rewilding the River Wye. Our latest project involves raising funds to replace the Ashwood bridges, making them safe, usable and accessible to all.
Fairfield Road – Gateway to Buxton
Fairfield is one of the main routes into town, but it wasn't the greatest advert! So a group of local residents got together to improve it by cleaning, tidying and beautifying with planters to make the area bloom.
Utilising Corporate Volunteer Hours
Employees from a number of larger companies have used paid 'volunteer' time off to help the Town Team with projects including repainting bridges in the Pavilion Gardens and benches on the Slopes. We even had one group with members of ten different nationalities, who gathered in Buxton for a team-building session. New ideas and volunteers are always welcome.
Once a month, the group meets somewhere around the town, taking bags, barrows and litter pickers with them, to clear out the rubbish and keep Buxton looking beautiful.
For the last few years we have joined forces with the Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust to run a spectacular Regency Ball in the Crescent. This year's event takes place on September 28 – volunteer helpers always welcome.
AND THERE'S MORE...
That’s not all: we're always on the lookout for new projects. If you have a suggestion that fits in with Town Team objectives – or if you'd like to get involved in helping with any of our projects – we’d love to hear from you. Contact details below.
